McLaren 720S Spider Review

A good supercar must boast more than a healthy combination of performance, outstanding style, and thrills. But, let’s be honest, people buy supercars to show off.

Yes, owning one of these ‘better ones’ may assure other petrolheads that you really know your cars, and having one sitting in your driveway might feel amazing.

It’s also the equivalent of hanging a very expensive sign over your door saying: ‘I don’t care what people think’.

And yes, it may also display to everyone that you have more money than sense.

But above it all, it’s got to make sense to you the driver – and the McLaren 720s ticks all the boxes you could expect to want in a supercar.

The 720s is McLaren’s intended successor to the 650s – and the UK’s answer to the Ferrari 488, just with more power, more performance, and a touch more practicality.

Its performance – powered by McLaren’s usual twin-turbo V8 but which has had it’s motor enhanced from 3.8-liter to 4.0-liter – sees it knocking on the abilities of McLaren’s 1.3 million USD hypercar, the P1.

There’s plenty more to make it a true replacement for the 650s – new pistons, turbos, intercoolers, and a stiffer crankshaft – all of which adds up to producing 720PS (710bhp).

It’s low (you won’t want to be driving down too many roads with speed bumps) but it soaks up niggles in the road thanks to its clever interconnected hydraulic suspension.

Anything weighing that little with that kind of power is going to be fast, but these numbers are mind-boggling.

The 720s goes from a mind-blowing 0-62mph in just 2.8secs with a staggering top speed of 212mph.

To put that in some perspective, the 720s take 10.4secs to cover a quarter of a mile from a standstill – the P1 takes 10.2secs.

But as well as the car’s astonishing speed, I want to talk about the car’s brakes and electronic traction control system.

The car is the absolute supercar you can get to show-off but it is also one of the best choices as its power will never let you down.
