Retro Pop-Up Headlights Return in Wild 2028 Mazda RX-7 CGI Revival

While large automakers chase EV launches, platform changes, and future-focused lineups, some digital creators keep revisiting old-school sports car icons. One of the latest examples imagines a fresh Mazda RX-7 with a design rooted deep in JDM history.

The rendering comes from David Scott Neal II, Chief Design Officer at Mozee Inc. and the artist known online as “nemojunglist.” His recent CGI work spent time around Stellantis projects, including a V12 Alfa Romeo concept, a Maserati counterpart, a base Citroen proposal, and even a V10-powered Viper interpretation. Earlier projects also touched Japanese performance cars. He previously imagined an R36 Nissan GT-R Nismo finished in Midnight Purple, revived the Nissan Silvia, and revisited the Lexus RC F grand tourer.

Now the spotlight lands on Mazda’s RX-7. The sports coupe existed through three generations between 1978 and 2002 and became closely linked with twin-rotor or turbo twin-rotor engines. Pop-up headlights also shaped the car’s identity across every generation. Neal clearly wanted those details back.

His unofficial 2028 RX-7 concept keeps the classic two-door coupe layout with a long hood, compact side glass, and low roof profile. The bodywork heads in a sharper direction than current Mazda production cars, though. Geometric surfaces dominate the shape, and exposed carbon fiber sections appear across the front fascia, side areas, and rear aero treatment. The crimson finish helps the details stand out without making the design feel overloaded.

Then there are the headlights. Slim LED daytime-running lights sit at the front, though the main talking point rests above them. Neal integrated LED elements directly into the pop-up headlight units beside the primary lamps, blending retro hardware with newer lighting graphics. Strange combination. Somehow, the layout still works.

The rear section references the FD-generation RX-7 through teardrop-shaped taillights, though the lighting graphics no longer connect across the tail. Another modern addition appears between those lamps. An active rear wing extends outward from the center section, giving the coupe a more aggressive stance from behind.

Powertrain details remain unknown. The concept clearly points toward an internal-combustion setup, though no confirmation exists regarding rotary hardware. Neal left the mystery untouched.

Meanwhile, much of the industry continues talking about electrification and future mobility plans. This RX-7 study heads somewhere else entirely. Old-school proportions, hidden headlights, visible aero pieces, and a front-engine coupe silhouette still attract attention, especially when wrapped into a design project like this one.
